There wasn't a particular scene at the end that pissed me off about it, I just never felt an overall cohesiveness to it. Right from the start, it just felt like it was revving up but never took off. Some of it was SO suspensful! The hotel scene, the scene when he brings water to the trucks, just about any scene with the bad guy. He was fucking AWESOME. And all the actors were really great. All the little side characters. The guy who played Tommy Lee Jones's sidekick. That guy was hilarious and rad. But I just felt like I was waiting for something. I don't think some big boss fight at the end would have changed that. It's actually nice that it didn't go that route. But I dunno, it just didn't feel "right" to me. Not artistically "right." Like "oh, the world isn't right, so neither is this story." I just felt like it could have been brought together tighter.

What's worse about Gamefly than their actual service (they get like a c+, sometimes a b- versus a+++ of netflix) is that fact that when you look at all the games available and start renting them, at least for the 360, the catalog just isn't that great. I mean, they pretty much offer every game that's come out for the 360, but when you have that at your fingertips, you start to realize that a lot of games just aren't that great. I dunno, it's the whole "renters" mentality, at least for me. When you buy something, you kinda invest something into it and you sometimes make it better in your mind than it probably is. But when you can rent every fucking game the system has, you kinda give them a glance, quickplay, then pass judgement and go "neexxxxt." That's how I am at least.

Rented "Bully." Rockstar game. GTA but set at a boarding school. So far, the story is pretty darn cool and interesting and already more enjoyable than any GTA that I've played (although GTA does give you that bonus of carjacking and violence). But it's still basically a GTA game and I dunno, I think I'm just getting older and less blown-away by games in general.

Rock Band, holy shit that game is fun. I don't have the Boston pack yet, but maybe soon. Have the dead pack, oasis and police, and then some random ones. Hey lets make a band tomorrow and play! I got boo-koo 48-hour codes, so if u have time on sunday let me know and ill email u a code.
I sorta liked the ending in the theater but definitely it is not as exciting as what came before it. Switching gears from one of the best thrillers in years to a kind of slow philosophical movie is tough. I'm going to rewatch the movie and see if the ending sits better when you know it's coming. Up until this point I've always liked Coen bros movies much better on repeat viewings so I'm hopeful this will occur.

Thanks for the "meh" stories on Gamefly. I was thinking about subscribing to them, but suppose I'll stay away. One question about COD4, Aeryk: did you get to the part where the nuke goes off? For me, that was the point at which the game changed from being pretty much like you described, to being fueled by goodness.

My apartment seems eerily quiet without the sound of the roaring fans and dehumidifiers. I almost came to enjoy them... one perk was that we could put laundry that was still damp in that room, and it would dry out within an hour. I also set up a series of moisture evaporation experiments but sadly, the contractors ended up removing the equipment that morning so science will just have to wait. Unless... unless I cause the bathroom to flood again?

I've started playing Rock Band again and picked up both the Grateful Dead and Boston packs. The Grateful Dead pack is really good because, being pretty much all blues guitar, there is little of the repetitiveness seen in a lot of other RB songs. (RB = Redondo Beach.) I'd say they're the most fun guitar songs in the game. The Boston pack is great because it finally gives you a chance to play "More Than A Feeling" with a full band! Everyone can serenade each other! It's awesome. Boston is actually a pretty good band, for being so relentlessly cheesy.

It would be so awesome to go to GenCon again. I haven't been back since 2000, and hey, new edition of D&D coming out around that time so there will be a lot of energy! Plus, I want to see what the Indianapolis equivalent of Colonel Ghoulby's is! Denis, do you think Peter would be interested? I imagine there would be a large selection of both nude elf miniatures and mech miniatures so there truly would be something for everyone!
lol, learn 2 watch movies n00b

| No Country For Old Men

Are you serious? Was there no other movies last year? That won best picture?

Just finished watching. Took me 3 days. I actually enjoyed quite a bit of it. Parts were REALLY suspenseful and pretty much all of the actors were great. But THAT was the best picture of last year!? WHAT THE FUCK?

No way. I just don't get it. I love the Coen Brothers. But that shit? I'm just in shock right now.

My gorillas let me show you them

Gorillas it is! Maybe I'll pick some up at Brookhurst this weekend.

Peter is go for the Khan.

Gygax Con? Hmmmm. I'm intrigued. I'm willing to entertain the idea. Bring on the peer pressure.

| Back in black

Pump: At-43 is pretty cool and plays very quick and easy. A bear and pretzels miniatures game. Hopefully the game fleshes out in the form of campaign rules of some sort. Pump the Gorillas!

eLzar: I can Has Room Hotel reserve from eNron! At this time there is some possibility that DaveDefeat and CrazyiVan may be defeated by the work monster, so I may reserve only one room until further updates. jr0n and I will try and grind them into coming in the mean time. Is Peter making it for sure? If he is then I think room two would be advisable.

jr0n: DyeGax Con would be great, but I think I would have to evaluate my options etc. Lets look into this. Anyone else have interest, or is this dead in the water?

I still keep looking at the Orange box. I still do get kicks out of HL2. It's no HL, but the game play is fun and it would be nice to get Episode 1 and 2. Plus Portal looks fun.

Yeah, Gamefly is unfortunately nowhere near as awesome as Netflix. It's a shame too. Netflix is just SO g-d rad. I guess their HUGE user base just makes them have boo-koo movies in stock and that shit just moves so fast.

Gamefly I think is cool in like 2-3 months spurts. Here's the trick for me as far as getting BRAND new titles. Empty you're Q the night b4 the game you want comes out, make it the only thing in your list. At midnight the game goes from "coming soon" to "available now" - they'll ship it to you that day. So I've got a bunch of new games that way. As far as games that are already out - it's pretty tough. People say keep you're Q small and your odds are better. I'm trying to get Bully cuz I've heard only good things about it. It's "medium" availability. So it's the only thing in my Q (have 1 open slot) so it's been 1 day, lets see how long it takes these cocksuckers to get me my game.

Played Recently:
Rainbow Six Vegas 2: Meh. It was mildly fun, but it's still felt like a gimped Gears of War. Missing some of that polish.

Splinter Cell Double Agent: Actually kinda fun and it's friggen 2 years older than the Rainbow Six game which just came out. I'm pretty godawful at being stealthy but it's fun just being paranoid and freaked out moving around crazy levels. One complaint - it's supposed to be full of "hard choices" because each level you get objectives for the terrorists (who you're undercover in) and/or the NSA (youre bosses) and they had this one where they're like: "Kill the innoncent guy so we know you're bad." ALL this build up and I just fuckin' shot his ass SO fast right in the head. They didn't build up any regret/suspense... like Mass Effect had a bunch of tougher choices than this shit. BUT, it's a pretty fun stealth game and it looks cool. Nuff said.

EDIT: Yay, Bully shipped today. So two days for a "medium" available game, meh, livable.

| Conz, FTW!

- GenCon probably not for me, but it is a REMOTE possibility.

- With Mike in, it looks like a repeat from last year! Mike, Eric, Denis, Enron, Rudy, Jon, Dave, Ian, and (Peter)! Huzzargh!

- Conquest in Santa Clara is a fantastic alternative to GenCon, hint hint, nudge nudge.

- Joined GameFly after hearing about it from Rudy. So far, here are my reviews from the past few weeks, cause you are all interested. BTW, I have TRIED to get Army of Two, some WWII possiblitiy FPS, and Turok since day one, and apparently when my order comes up, they are out of stock, so I am 0 - 3 trying to get current titles, which kind of ticks me off about GameFly:

Call of Duty 4: Meh. Looks pretty, but is just mildly scripted chaos. Hard to follow, not all that interesting. Packaged and returned same day I received it.

Call of Duty 3: See Call of Duty 4. Returned following day I received it.

Orange Box: Portal was pretty fun, I played through it last night. Funny, clever and the perfect length. It started getting a little repetitive before the ending so I'm glad it ended when it did. I fired up TF:2 hoping there was a single player version a la Unreal Tournament, alas there was not, so I exited that bad boy. Gonna play some HL episode I and II tonight for a bit. Best bang for the buck in a game ever!

- Re:Portal. After playing through it, I can remember some of the levels I saw last year at the GDC and how they were retooled and rethemed COMPLETELY for this version. The moving platforms were all turtles in hot lava, and I think the OG concept for the energy balls as obstructions rather than being used to activate things, were actually goblins hopping around in a pattern. Funny.

- Booblacon: I think I am gonna bring Mobile Gaming Unit One and pack it full of games and get a flea bag table to try and offload as much as I can. I could use the room and the thought of keeping these things for another move just really irks me. My hope is that i the price is right, I can offload most of them.

| While we're talking cons...

...anyone interested in going to GenCon (aka GygaxMemorialCon) this year? I think I could swing it.

| I Can Has Booblacon?

Count me in on Booblacon too. I may be silent, but I'm not dead (yet).

| Difficulties so far starting the biz

Logo's under developement, Brand names chosen, corporation and trademark are being registered in the US. Tomorrow night i'm having dinner with the VP of the Shopping Mall where i plan to erect my store and pitch her my store concept and business plan. The mall has no vacancy due to it's popularity and this is the only way to get a lease with preferential bumping on the waiting list.
I hope i get this lease because this is the only location I want at the moment... No lease probably means no business...

| Ah, Booblacon

Feel free anyone that is coming up to fly in Thursday night to SJC (san jose airport) and you can stay here and head out to the con Friday sometime. I mean, I don't want Dave and Ian here, but we could figure out anyone else, I'm sure. Inflatable bed, guest bed, floor and couch can sleep a few folks.

Depending on what time of the day you fly, looks like in the ballpark of $150 round trip, because it is a holiday weekend.

So, we have Eric, Enron, J0rn, Rudy, Denis, Dave, Ian, and MAYBE Peter? Looks like last year, so we should get two rooms again, right? Not that I want to reserve the rooms, it was so nice to let Enron deal with that last year... :)
I was planning on going up to the con friday morning (like crack of dawn or I don't know, early) and then coming back Monday morning probably - I don't work that week but I'm also sure I'll be quite through with everyone so I don't picture myself stickin' around. Lot's of second-hand smoke and possible car accident good times for those who dare!

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Sadly I only took pictures of the line to get into the con (Wonder Festival). Alot to take in. Was in shellshock the whole time. Too busy swimming through crowds and such. Here's some coverage though:

Oh yeah parts are NSFW (boobies!)

The con was separated into two halls; industry (toy companies, etc.) and everyone else (amateur, clubs, small businesses). The event was for one day and primarily deals with resin kits. Most are amateur operations that are allowed to sell kits based on copyrighted material. Only bought a couple of kits. One based on an anime (Witch Hunter Robin) and video game (Odin Sphere). Also got a bondage ninja girl kit (with optional topless costume). Tee hee boobies..

As for the rest of the trip, I mostly have pictures of food. That's how I roll.

Jon - AT-43 sounds interesting. If I end up getting the mecha gorillas, I'll let you know.

Rudy - what time and days were you planning to leave and come back for Kubla Con?
Oh yeah, Denis, if you need any incentive/justification to buy the gorilla miniatures: I have a bunch of stuff for AT-43, Enron and I played it and confirmed it was a lot of fun, and I would totally bring my stuff to Kubla!

I'm working from home today, which I don't normally get to do, but someone has to be here because my fucking bathroom flooded and ruined a bunch of carpet. At first our landlord (an ancient man) told us that it would be cool just to open the windows and let everything dry out. Fortunately his perpetually exasperated property manager made the right call to get some carpet drying specialists in. Now I have these gargantuan fans and an epic-level dehumidifier running 24/7 in the back bedroom. It is like the sahara desert in there. Living in a damp land of mold, this doesn't seem like such a bad thing!

Plus, work from home, which means beer with lunch. Huzzah!

Monday, March 24, 2008

Man, yeah I picked the wrong week for my vacation haha. See, when I googled Kubla Con the first entry's little synopsis says:
Held in Burlingame, CA, May 28-31, 2004. 2004, asshole. When you click the link it has the current cons dates. Well, I'll just have to take friday off and come up that day. So at least I'll have a friggen week off from work AFTER the convention. That might be good. Like a cooldown period.

Sunday, March 23, 2008

eh? nah, I was getting loaded and high on Proscar, which is a 5mg tablet of propecia (finesteride). Overdoesing will probably just grow a jungle on my balls and at worse erectile dysfunction or an explosive bladder. Probably won't take the stuff that'll make you go hallucinating, at least anytime soon. No worries mate.

I bought 5 DVD's with 16 movies on em each (pirated) that's, count em, 80 movies! I went through 1 DVD this weekend, and fast forwarded most of the shit parts. I find that I tend to forward alot when u don't want to spend the time watching cheap movies.
and why are you getting prescription drugs? you better not be getting painkillers like oxycontin or vicodins or whatever. That shit will seriously fucking kill you man.
Dennis! you got pics of ur adventure? or it never happend! Sounds like an awesome convention compared to the ones we go to. yeah, gencon offers R2D2, stormtroopers, the black nazi, but it would be a refreshing change to see some toonier characters and asian nerds (not the stereotypical 16 candles kind). Jon, I have a large tentacle kit for ya...
O ya.

Side note: getting perscription drugs is way too easy here. Took 15 min to do the whole thing including the drive. They didn't even bother to ask why I needed it. Crack cocaine anyone?

Rude,
popcorn chicken = the nasty
Denis, that sounds like an awesome convention! I have sometimes thought about picking up a modeling kit of some type or another, but given I have a shelf groaning with unpainted Warmachine/Hordes miniatures have held off so far. Did you get any good perverted model kits or anything like that? I bet they had naughty tentacle model kits. Were there naughty tentacle model kits? How many new Gundam kits did you buy? I seem to recall you have one or two.

As for whather I am still interested in the 40k RPG, the answer is definitely YES! That game looks fucking awesome to play. I tried to get the local boys together for a game but due to scheduling conflicts, my vacation and now starting up the Descent campaign, it's not happening actively, but the game looks so fun. I would be strongly interested in running it at Kubla. It is always good when we have an RPG to play at the con.

Speaking of Descent, so far the campaign seems to be everything I was hoping for, in that it lets you play lots of shorter dungeons, rather than five or six-hour beasts, and provides a fairly fun and interesting leveling system for both the hero AND overlord players. It is definitely a more RPG-like experience in general, although when it comes down to it the gameplay in the dungeon is more or less the same, so if you're someone like Aeryk for whom the resurrect-in-town-after-dying mechanic fails to resonate, I'm not sure whether the campaign would be a big improvement. This would also be a good one to bring to Kubla actually. It probably would be possible to complete a short campaign.

I have also been toying with the idea of picking up a Blood Bowl team for Kubla, believe it or not. Either the amazons or the nurgle dudes.
Hey Dennis, maybe you can Peter can drive up with me? I'll prolly leave that Friday morning or Thursday at some point depending on when ppl are going to the Con. I still need to see when I asked for VC though when I get back to work on Monday. Goddamn, that's tomorrow :(

Happy Easter!

Rock Band had a really good update so now there's an in-game music store for all the downloadable songs - you can preview them - really good setup. For Eric's and Jon's, if you haven't logged in go d/l it - it's pretty neato.

Oh my gosh, I watched one of the funniest comedy concert dvds. Jim Gaffigan: Beyond the Pale. It's actually a "watch it now" also if you have Netflix and it's really friggen funny. And he never even cusses, weird. But just some funny shit (lots of talk about food which I can relate to for some reason. :(

Salutations! Got back from Japan over a week ago. Of course I catch the bird flu as soon as I breathe in LA air. Still not over it yet. Also it looks like the country goes to hell when I leave. I come back and Gygax is dead and gas is almost 4 bucks? I gotta find closer places to get my porn.

The trip was primarily to go to a model figure con. Image a Gen Con sized event for model figure kits of all kinds: Girls, robots, monsters, anime characters, video game characters, girls in maid outfits, girls in impractical armor, girls with swords. You get the idea.

Didn't find myself a yakusa bride. Did have a 50 dollar steak though. Meh, Apparently my palate isn't refined enough to appreciate expensive food. Did have the freshest sushi I'll ever eat. It was at the main fish market in Tokyo. Did do a ton of nerd shopping.

I'm going to try to make Kubla Con this year. I think Peter is interested too. I'll talk to him. Have to work out travel plans too.

Jon - you still have the hots for Warhammer 40K RPG? I picked up the book too. Though I was terribly crushed that one can't make a bondage eldar pirate, it's still interesting. Oh and At-43? Gorillas in power armor? We live in a wondrous age.

Eric - Civil War?.... ..... .... I guess if I close my eyes and wish really really hard, Sherman was a hot bondage dark elf riding in a tank. Send me the info. Any excuse to go mini shopping is an act of patriotism.
