Beware the Eragon

Much more dangerous than the dragon, yet less deadly than the fragon. Worst of all... the gragon.

Oh yeah happy bday Art! Judging by your picture, you don't look a day over eleven. You must be quite precocious to have already purchased a house and fathered a child! Well, that lines up with the word on the street. I heard that you and Enron are total studs!

I just finished packing, I am tired. Looking forward to waking up in 3.75 hours!

Sorry Jon, there's a provision in the Patriot Act that prevents the import of foreign mimes. Gotta support our homeland security policies, don't you know. And we don't call them no faggoty names like mimes, we calls them Freedom Clowns! They carry big guns and don't shut up fer no foreners.

Bon voyage, and bring me back a jaded, chain-smoking, art-school French girl instead.
holy der wienerschnitzel! have a rad trip dude! that totally comes outta the blue for me! JEEZ! Wish I was up there to learn these things (if up there was LA not SF.) HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!
Well... if all you've seen of Borat are the clips from TV, you really can't judge it very well (don't mean to come off like a jerk there). I wasn't impressed by the clips either; the sum is much funnier than the parts. I mean the running of the Jew, come on. Rude dog is quite correct that it reminds me of the sort of humor that we make at cons and stuff, which JP was particularly a master at.

I think that what Borat is like is the parts of Jackass where they play pranks on the unsuspecting public... except those parts tend to come off unfunny and mean-spirited in Jackass, and are really funny in Borat. (The humor of Jackass comes from the boys keeping the masochism and sadism within their group, not when they direct it out.)

But hey, whatevas. The world is a rainbow etcetera.

Bonjour! (explosion)

So I'm off to le France tomorrow (insert witticisms about cowardice in WWII, cheese eating, etc. -- feel free to grab some from here). Yes, for a week I will be walking the Champs d'Elysee with my girl, accosting Frenchmen, showing them my US flag underwear and demanding to know if they know that they'd be speaking German if not for me, laughingly telling them how thanks to their not joining the war in Iraq, that "french fries" are now called "faggot fries," berating their berets, and finally, pulling out my six-guns and shooting them while shouting "Yee-haw!" I expect it will be phenomenally enjoyable! I will return with a fine scarf that will put yours to shame, Denis! Just you wait and see! I will also bring back a mime.
Along with being Deef and Mute apparently I have gone blind...

At least that is what I am sticking to as my excuse for not posting in such a long while. Your momma. Tits. Oh and some OJ.

Anyway, Borat... Uggg, I think I would hate it. jr0n almost had me convinced and then I remembered I hated Election Day, Rushmore, and Curb Your Enthusiasm for a reason. I squirm during situational humor. So BLAH!

Casino Royale was pretty darn good I thought. The Departed was good too, although a bit difficult to follow at times. Too be honest I have not watched a whole lot of movies of late. I liked Little Miss Sunshine. I won't say it is great, but I did enjoy it.

jr0n: Fuck You Forever... Brilliant. Have fun in France dude. Remember what I said. Lots of "French" laughs and Thumb-Index-finger nose caricatures will get you all the respect you need.

I actually watched Devil Wears Prada too and yeah, pretty entertaining. TOTALLY don't see how anyone was nominated for any kind of oscar for it (think 2 ppl!?) but it was watchable and fine. I like pretty girls and it had loads of em.

RE: Borat, I've been a big fan of Da Ali G Show ever since I'd seen the british clips from it, then the HBO version. I'll say it, the guys a friggin genius. While I have NO idea how Eragon Hess and Ryan and EVERYONE gets into the Jackass stuff (those are the kind of coke-whore's who would have punched me in the face in high school and called me a fag) I guess I gotta just realize some people won't like the Ali G style of humor either. I'd say if anyone were interested in exploring it, you start with the BBC (I guess- they have what, ONE channel in England?!) version of his show. He re-did a lot of stuff for the HBO version and some of the edge was lost in translation. But Kootaloo Almighty, that dude makes me LOL.
Jackass is to Jeff Stimfig (or whatever tool form HS who kicked the retarded guy down the bleachers at a game) as Borat is to JP Munro (don't ya think!?)

Speaking of LOL - don't wanna steal yer thunder jon, but: Me and Jon were chattin for a few in WoW the other day and he related a story of how he IM's with his coworkers who are maybe just a few cubes down from him, and when they write "LOL" to him he hears only the sound of silence from thier cube. That shit is funny.
I've watched several clips of Borat and I will smash my balls with a mallet before I ever sit through the whole movie. Ever. I'm not big on 'over the top uncomfortable-forced scene' movies. I don't find it funny in the least, and I can't believe anyone actually bought into that completely transparent schtick.

Little Miss Sunshine.. didn't dig it so much. It had moments, and I laughed here and there, sure. But when the bus they were all driving in is the star of the movie, I think that says something about the quality of the remainder of the product. The ending, specifically, was totally fucking lame. I will freely admit that as a pet peeve of mine. I can't stand stupid-ass endings, and oh boy, does 'Sunshine' deliver a huge steamer of a horrible ending. It's like the writers ran out of brains when attempting to write the closing.

I've already said that "300" was pretty good, but that's not a renter just yet.

Regarding "Crash".. I'm suprised that you didn't like it? I thought it was a phenominal movie and I even bought it.. and I don't 'buy' movies just to buy them. I would totally recommend that movie.

Here's one not many have seen, but is probably one of the top 20 movies I've ever seen in my life.. "Everything is Illuminated". It starts off a little slow (the first 5-10 minutes are a little tedious) and subtitled here and there (for those adverse), but it takes off from there and is a roller coaster ride of funny bits, introspection and personal exploration. Really, very very good.

What else.. saw "The Devil Wears Prada". Worth seeing. Not very meaningful or deep, but interesting and entertaining for the performances.

I also just watched a romantic comedy with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo.. can't think of the name of it.. but she's a 'ghost' in a subletted apartment that he is renting. It was light, easy, fun and pretty good. Had one of the best one-liners in a movie I've seen in a long time (can't say, for fear of blowing the plot!)

Have you ever seen "The Red Violin" ? That's one of my all-time favorites.

Alright, going to bed.

Late,

Cap'n O.

P.S. Happy birthday to me in 30 minutes! Wheeeee, I'm old!
Eric, knowing you like I do, you would HATE Borat. I really liked Departed and Casino Royale, but of course, I really liked Babel too, which you didn't. Hell, I don't know. I am pretty bad at guessing what you'd like. I did see a preview for Pirates of the Carribean III, which looked really cool. I am willing to forgive Pirates II. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't as good as the first one. It felt like a set up for the third movie, kind of like Empire Strikes Back, but closer to Back To the Future II. I am probably the only person in the world who really did not like Little Miss Sunshine. There, I said it. Heard Black Dalia sucked balls. Heard Eragon sucked balls too.

Two documentaries I loved:
The Man Who Skied Down Mount Everest. Won best documentary in 1975. Visually stimulating and so well done.

Mr. Death. Same guy who did Thin Blue Line. Wow. You think the film is going one direction, and then it takes a really odd turn. Such a mind-fuck.

I have been watching a lot of documentaries lately. I just finished reading Lord of the Flies with my students, and have a doc about Stanford Prison Experiment on order. Had them watch a short film called The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. The winner of the lottery gets stoned to death. I guess I have been into some really dark shit lately. Been obsessed with the idea that man is inherently evil and, given the opportunity tends to do evil things. Thoughts? :(

Sorry I have been MIA lately. I have been a hermit. Spring break is in 2 weeks. I'll come out of my shell then. Peace. I bought a new acoustic guitar by the way.
Borat
Li'l Miss Sunshine
Casino Royale was a good recommendation
The Departed

Out of left field recommendations: I've been watching a lot of Hitchcock movies lately! They're good! I liked Notorious and Rear Window especially.

Not recommended:
Blood of Heroes
Pootie Tang
Crash
En route: Saw 2... pickin some winners there dude!

I liked the Casino Royale with Cheese movie. That's a jam. Pan's Labyrinth was good but not sure if its "out" just yet - can rent "The Devil's Backbone" - pretty much the same thing. But its subtitled and dunno if you can handle that. Borat - have it havent seen it yet - i recommend. I dunno - new superman was cool. Dude I'm pretty behind on movies too :( - have Hollywoodland: can't go wrong with Ben Affleck! ... looks interesting. Black Dahlia was Brown Doo Doo.

Netflix, some movies, and a baby makes three.

Leslie and I are starting to watch a little bit of movie at night after Wylie is asleep and just before Leslie falls asleep. Needless to say, the two of us have been, how do you say "out of touch" with movies the past two years so we are asking the fine Action Team if they have a few movies that we could get through Netflix that would be worth watching.

Ideas?

So far my mini review of what we have seen to date:

Pirates of the Carribean II: Some Bullshit - Took us 3 nights to watch it and had to listen to it low so we may have missed something, but me no likey. Annoying, not funny, pretty to look at, crappy story, beyond over the top action, characters became unbelieveable. Too long of a reveiew.

Flags of Our Fathers: Good. Critical look at wartime domestic politics and what makes the warmachine go. Action scenes were not the caliber of Band of Brothers, ergo, ipso facto, they were lacking.

Running With Scissors: Apparently the book is more funny. We stopped about 30 minutes into it 'cause it was lame and depressing, and was not what Leslie was hoping it would be.

Babel: There is a time in everyone's life when they view art to gain a critical insight into the world, to see and feel what others who may be starkly different than they, experience; be it joy, horror, pain, fear, or suffering. That time is not right now for me and this movie depressed the hell out of me so again, we stopped it before the drunk nephew drove his aunt and her two nanny kids across the Mexican border. Heard how the movie ended, was non-plussed.

Bubba Ho-Tep: In progress.

En Route: Saw II.

Saw "300" the other day. Pretty good, actually! I liked the graphic-novel aesthetic. It was a little corny in parts, sure. The one-liners were funny, the action was solid, and the 'historical' aspect was compelling.. definately worth a trip to the movies.
Thanks! I felt completely like a crazy man on Thursday (if you couldn't tell from my post). I feel much more human today however. I've been essentially doing nothing the whole weekend and it feels great. Yesterday I bought God of War and played it almost all day.

Micro-reviews of movies I've seen recently

Reno 911: Miami!: Exactly like watching the show for 80 minutes
A History of Violence: Pretty good. Sticks with you
For Your Consideration: Surprisingly bad
The Prestige: Pretty good. Ending is simultaneously interesting and stupid

Micro-reviews of Futurama episodes I've seen recently

The dog one. Dude, wtf!?!?!?
