Gay is as gay does...
Jon, to answer your question, yeah it is pretty cool. It was really fun about two weekends ago when they started this. The mayor started the marriage business thursday eve before presidents day weekend. When the christian fundamentalist were not able to get into court before the end of friday he had the city hall to stay open saturday, sunday, and monday (Presidents day). Most of the people were working off the clock as volunteers. The line to get married in the city hall was huge and CNN was covering the whole event. The best part, since all the courts were closed, it left the conservatives seething all weekend long. Then the first two cases filed on monday against the process were denied an injunction, setting up a longer period for marriages and more litigation. As you can imagine, most of the people here are very supportive (Polls seem to show a 4:1 margin for gay marraige). One local news article summed it up in the headline, "Newsom hatches a plan for queer marriage and puts San Francisco in its rightful place at the forefront of the fight". I guess the mayor, Gavin Newsom, decided to start this process after he heard Bush trash talking gay marriage. Granted that a cynical person would see it as Gavin Newsom courting the Gay constituency which is huge here and trying to make a huge mark for himself across the country (He is very ambitious), but I still see him making the right moves. Certainly the Govonator is not happy. Go judicial system! Maybe this will be one of the times the judical system works.
