En route: Saw 2... pickin some winners there dude!

I liked the Casino Royale with Cheese movie. That's a jam. Pan's Labyrinth was good but not sure if its "out" just yet - can rent "The Devil's Backbone" - pretty much the same thing. But its subtitled and dunno if you can handle that. Borat - have it havent seen it yet - i recommend. I dunno - new superman was cool. Dude I'm pretty behind on movies too :( - have Hollywoodland: can't go wrong with Ben Affleck! ... looks interesting. Black Dahlia was Brown Doo Doo.

Netflix, some movies, and a baby makes three.

Leslie and I are starting to watch a little bit of movie at night after Wylie is asleep and just before Leslie falls asleep. Needless to say, the two of us have been, how do you say "out of touch" with movies the past two years so we are asking the fine Action Team if they have a few movies that we could get through Netflix that would be worth watching.

Ideas?

So far my mini review of what we have seen to date:

Pirates of the Carribean II: Some Bullshit - Took us 3 nights to watch it and had to listen to it low so we may have missed something, but me no likey. Annoying, not funny, pretty to look at, crappy story, beyond over the top action, characters became unbelieveable. Too long of a reveiew.

Flags of Our Fathers: Good. Critical look at wartime domestic politics and what makes the warmachine go. Action scenes were not the caliber of Band of Brothers, ergo, ipso facto, they were lacking.

Running With Scissors: Apparently the book is more funny. We stopped about 30 minutes into it 'cause it was lame and depressing, and was not what Leslie was hoping it would be.

Babel: There is a time in everyone's life when they view art to gain a critical insight into the world, to see and feel what others who may be starkly different than they, experience; be it joy, horror, pain, fear, or suffering. That time is not right now for me and this movie depressed the hell out of me so again, we stopped it before the drunk nephew drove his aunt and her two nanny kids across the Mexican border. Heard how the movie ended, was non-plussed.

Bubba Ho-Tep: In progress.

En Route: Saw II.

Saw "300" the other day. Pretty good, actually! I liked the graphic-novel aesthetic. It was a little corny in parts, sure. The one-liners were funny, the action was solid, and the 'historical' aspect was compelling.. definately worth a trip to the movies.
Thanks! I felt completely like a crazy man on Thursday (if you couldn't tell from my post). I feel much more human today however. I've been essentially doing nothing the whole weekend and it feels great. Yesterday I bought God of War and played it almost all day.

Micro-reviews of movies I've seen recently

Reno 911: Miami!: Exactly like watching the show for 80 minutes
A History of Violence: Pretty good. Sticks with you
For Your Consideration: Surprisingly bad
The Prestige: Pretty good. Ending is simultaneously interesting and stupid

Micro-reviews of Futurama episodes I've seen recently

The dog one. Dude, wtf!?!?!?

Fuck you forever, (name of project)!

My project is FINALLY FUCKING FINISHED.

Jesus. The last two months of my life have been crazy. Filled with more OT, more corporate bullshit, and more stress than any other. But it's finished! God Damn!

I cannot even begin to express to you guys how relieved I am to have this thing done with.

I'm at home and the sun is still out! Holy fuck!

This is my first significant project where I was in a management position. Normally in QA, you get tired from the long hours at the end, you're sick of the product. But at the end of the day, you find a crash bug the day you're supposed to ship, it's no big deal. But this was different. It was my project. Every bug had me wondering how we could have possibly missed this stuff before. Sick days, nah. Optional overtime, no. I mean I could skip out. But it was my show and my ass on the line. At the end, I still liked the product, but I was actively sick of it. Today when we were trying to find final stop ship bugs... I may have ignored a couple of things that I saw. Whereas normally I am the most obsessive compulse bug writer of all time.

At this point I'm so happy to be done. The only thing that would ever induce me to go back in tomorrow and work on it more is if I heard about a bug that would blind any kid under eight or something. Even then... I might not go in.

I got the afternoon and tomorrow off, so I'm gonna hang out, drink beer, play video games, and possibly check myself into a mental asylum.

Monday I start working on the patch.

D'oh.

Genius!

I don't read the blog for 2 weeks and rudy becomes the comic genie. Genius!
Yeah, you can count me in Lil' Skittle. That's a new nickname I just invented. Don't know who to use it on, so for now Eric is known as Lil' Skittle. Cuz u got all them fruit flavors! Don't read into it guys, inside joke... literally INSIDE (like in the bum.) Yeah, obviously I'm working very hard at work right now.

I'm off tomorrow so if we can get some daytime gaming in, give me a ring. After dark put a fork in me, cuz I'm done! Meaning, I'll be playing WoW or working out at the gym wishing I was playing WoW. Meaning meaning, I'll be PLAYING WoW, wishing I was at the gym, while lifting jelly donuts to my face in a curling motion simulating working out, dually satisfying my workout craving and jelly donut bukkake fetish. Wearing a diaper. Strung Out will be playing in the background the entire time.

CC:E Design Kit!

So I registered with GMT and the creator of CC:E as a potential scenario designer! I have a few pages of documents that add points values and whatnot to the units and equipment and some design hints, as well as what they are looking for as far as "Battle Pack" themes, which right now is Paratroop stuff, but for Battle Pack II they want Russian v German in and around Stalingrad. Awesome!

Rudy! We gotta get some scenarios played and made d00d!

Warhammer Quest

I recently "found" a CD with .pdf's of EVERYTHING ever made for WHQ!!! The Orc expansion, the undead expansion, every character pack, all the White Dwarf articles, all 3 treasure packs (though I own those already), as well as hi-rez scans of all the bonus tiles and cards included in the expansions, and WD articles. Not to mention pdf's of the original rulebook and adventure book. So cool. I'm thinking of making a Mega-Tome of everything and getting it spiral bound at Kinko's along with totally printing and mounting all the bonus tiles, and printing the cards out, then mounting them and sticking them, and all the other dungeon and encounter cards in sleeves to make them all look and feel uniform!

Hooray! Now, if I could just get a game in sometime...

Ahoy thar! Thar be some scheming dopplegangers in sunny SF. I suggest local Action Team members pay them a visit and clear up any confusion.

Yaaaaaaar!

Oh, and this is going to be me in ten years, so I would really appreciate it if we started my bail fund now...

mmmm elfy
It'd been a stale couple weeks for SomethingAwful but then they dropped this gem which I will link and copy/paste. The rest of the article is good (the soccer and nascar parts) but had to plaster this hockey part for you special friends.

HOCKEY
Hockey sucks because it's all about drunken rednecks staggering around a freezing cold room and beating each other with sticks. Think that's a sport? Think again, buddy. It's an Alaskan childhood. If I wanted to watch a bunch of oil-drilling ice jawas brawl over a tin of Skoal for hours on end I'd head up north and tell people chewing made their women look even more like cattle. I don't give a fuck what Super Smash Brothers says, ain't nobody climbing ice up there unless there's a jar of
pickled eggs and a stack of unemployment paperwork at the top.

Hockey also sucks because most people who play it are French Canadian. You know how how to get a locker room full of those guys pumped before a game? Hang a banner saying "IF YOU LOSE, YOU WILL HAVE TO SHAVE." While I certainly hate to marginalize a society whose greatest cultural export is Celine Dion, sometimes you have to wake up and smell the coffee. Or, in this case, the garlic-meets-spoiled-milk stink that wafts over Michigan every time a southerly wind blows. Those things that run over the ice in between periods aren't mobile freezers. They're gigantic Glade Plug-Ins.

Of course, ethnicity and body odor can't do much to harm a sport that's already the boringest goddamn thing in the universe. Hockey fans are prone to rioting after particularly "exciting" games. I can only imagine the terror they would cause if they visited a fabric store. Give a hockey fan a lighter and a tape of ABC Family programming and he'll burn down an entire city block before someone finds a pork rind big enough to distract him.

I might be going a little too harsh, though. The NHL recently tweaked its offensive rules, allowing for high-octane barn-burners that end with with exciting scores like "three to nothing" or sometimes "four to two." The only thing that reaches double digits in a hockey game is blood alcohol content. Even that's nothing to cheer about, since you could drink a hockey fan into a coma and he'd still talk sports in his sleep. When something like this happens you hear the phrase "defensive game" thrown around. "Defensive game" is French Canadian for "Americans like offense, so I think it's trash." For the record, there are a lot of people who hate scoring and would rather spend their time badmouthing America. You can find them here.

In closing, I would like to reiterate that hockey is a boring piece of shit and anyone remotely involved in it is a white-trash mole person with three good teeth and even fewer working chromosomes. Normally I would shudder at the amount of hate mail this statement would receive, but none of my words ended in "-eux," and to my knowledge nothing I said was a crude reference to cunnilingus. That should protect me from the French Canadian contingent, anyway.

Toribash!!!

So the GDC was very enlightening, interesting, and useful, but what would a game convention be without some really cool game links?!?!?

- So far, Toribash has been a big hit. I am JUST starting to get the hang of it, so don't quit and give up on it early, there are many, many subtle ways to control your warrior. Play around with it, I would LOVE to try and get some network goodness out of this game some time!

- Also, anything from Man!festo Games is interesting to me, and would probably be to others as well. They have lots of demos available and their games are interesting, indie, and fun! I like (from the demos, anyway) Fast Crawl and DROD so far, but I am sure there are other winners out there too.

But back to my original point, PLAY TORIBASH!
