How do you rank high on the search engines or is there a way to get better rankings in short of actually paying for an advertised space.

For example, I want to rank high under "Cables, Custom Cables, Wires, Transformers, Power Magnetics, Cable assemblies, etc etc etc." How would I go about that in an educated fashion?
