Not D&D related: Ja-el, Enron, Myke and a variety of fine ladies came over last night for a little Rock Band action. This game is always great when you get a full band. I will say that I learned that Enron is a very entertaining, if not exactly technically skilled singer.

At the end of the night Enron, Mike and I decided to play the manly trio of Metallica songs. Ultimate disappointment at the end when we failed out in the last song, at 58% of the way through And Justice for All, ie, 20 minutes into it. We'll have to take another stab at it next time.

| Magic: The Xboxing

On a co-worker's recommendation, I downloaded the demo, and later the full version of Xbox Live's version of Magic. It's fun! It's been at least 10 years since I played Magic (... holy shit) but I still remember it well and enjoy it.

What I like is: the game costs 10 bucks, and you're done. No booster pack bullshit or anything like that. There is not much deck building. You have a choice of premade decks. You do get new cards for those decks as you play through the game so you can a little modification. Yeah, dumbed down a little for the Xboxers I guess, but I am totally cool with that in this workaday world.

If any of you Xboxers download it, we could have ourselves an fun time!

Ok, got my car - ended up getting a CR-V. About the same MPG as my last ride but sturdier, I dunno, I like it. It was right in my price range, paid cash, done.

Ignite vocalist Zoli Teglas has been tapped to temporarily fill the vacant position in Pennywise. Teglas will be taking the place of longtime Pennywise singer Jim Lindberg who departed in August 2009. As of right now, the vocalist has only been confirmed for the two day Smokeout Festival set for October 23 and 24 and also set to include Slipknot, Deftones, Cypress Hill, Kottonmouth Kings, Bad Brains, Method Man/Red Man and a recently reunited Sublime.

Teglas is looking forward to playing with Pennywise and their hometown So Cal fans adding, “I'm stoked to be singing these upcoming shows with Pennywise. I'm a huge fan of the band and am super grateful to share the stage with my long time friends Fletcher, Byron, and Randy. “

Not only that, I hate festivals, and as festivals go, this seems like a particularly shitty one.

Sorry I don't have any car recommendations Rude -- don't know shit about cars, never have. I recommend one with four wheels: far more stable than a bicycle or pennyfarthing.

| Jeeps

I love driving Jeeps about town. They are surprisingly maneuverable (short wheel base) bouncy and lovely in the summer with the top down and doors off. They are a drag at highway speeds though. Oh and yes the gas mileage is absolutely atrocious. My father's mid-90s YJ commonly got 13 miles a gallon. Worse than his Grand Cherokee that weighed 25% more and had 50% more cubic displacement. Amazing. Even the 2009 models only get 15/19 per the new EPA measurements. Booo, because I like the vehicles. They are built like tanks, geared for the off road and suffer accordingly.

The smart cars look scary on the road. It just looks like they would get crushed by an SUV. I did see the video of one test running a Smart car at 70 head on into a concrete barrier. The vehicle was ruined; however, the driver's space didn't get crushed. Assuming no spinal injury would have occurred from the deceleration and whiplash, the driver would have survived.

Good to hear the Prius is still going strong. I would probably go for a used one and theres 2003-2005s for around $14k. I'm just not sure if they keep on jammin' after a few years. Aaron, please tell me a Wrangler gets as good mileage, PLEASE :)

Buying a friggen car is a headache. If I think about putting down $10k then getting a new Prius at mid 20ks, then it opens up basically every other car out there too, and I have total overload.

Edit: Thanks for the bonus tips Enron! I want a friggen MINI! MINI-HYBRID! A friend has a smart car and those friggen awful - you look like a clown and the ride is super bouncey and all the accidents I have, death for sure.

Rude: Most Prius owners I talk to gush about there vehicles. They are of course quite efficient as eLzar noted, have a nice technophile factor and in true Toyota form are extremely reliable from a maintenance stand point. All this and they are classified as a mid-sized sedan, unlike most other efficient vehicles. They also hold there value really well.

The Mini Coops are great little cars and for a standard gas engine are one of the most fuel efficient, although not as much as the Prius. They tend to get real mpg numbers in the high 20's for the city and mid-high 30's for the highway. Art has an S model and says, even when driving like a shithead, he gets mid-30 mpg. Also, they are quite peppy, especially the S model) and definitely feel a bit like a go cart, in a good way. I have a lot of fun driving my mothers when I am in LA. They do have a major downside though, to make them that efficient, they have made the backseats very tight. The legroom is killer in the backseat for long trips or large people. Also, the luggage space is definitely tight, but not impossible. They are a snap to park though. There is also the clubman model which is something like 4 inches longer; however, they look a little dis-proportioned to my eye and you do lose a slight amount of mileage.

If so inclined, you may also look at Diesel vehicles. They are quite efficient, more so than gas but less than a hybrid, and the modern diesels are much better than the pigs of prior decades. Typically turbocharged by default (really a requirement for diesel), Faster/peppier, quieter and much cleaner. Unfortunately, they suffer the same cost premium issue that afflicts hybrids. Also, you would need to buy new or near-new. Diesels were a bit of a problem in California until the past year or so due to smog issues that the manufacturers needed to solve.
